Recent accomplishments
During the leadership of Dr Preman Jeyaratnam, much was accomplished :
Medical Team Formed:
Dr Preman Jeyaratnam was the first Medical Superintendent in the newly revived Green Memorial Hospital. He had his undergraduate medical education in Christian Medical College, Vellore and postgraduate medical training in the UK. He practiced medicine in the UK for several decades and freely gave his services to Green Memorial Hospital.
Dr Ratnanathan David an old student of hartley College, Jaffna and a Dental Surgeon is the current Medical director.
Medical programmes established:
24 hour service: The addition of new doctors has made it possible to offer a 24 hour service even during periods of heightened tension.
Nurses’ Training: In a push towards the re-establishment of Nurses’ Training Programmes, a Health Care Assistant Course was run at the Hospital. This program was funded by Christian Aid UK.
Mobile Clinic: To meet the needs of the poor families in remote areas of the Peninsula, the two Charitable Hospitals, Green Memorial and McLeod Innuvil, conducted free mobile clinics in five areas.
Leprosy Colony: A community based rehabilitation project, with Green Memorial as the referral hospital has been connected within an “internally displaced community” from Katturpulam, which has been affected by leprosy and more recently by the Tsunami. This program was funded for five years by the Leprosy Mission International.
Physiotherapy: A fully equipped Physiotherapy service now functions with a full time qualified Physiotherapist.
In-patient Facility: A limited in-patient facility is now operational to serve patients who require short term admission.
Consultations: Specialists in Surgery, Cardiology, ENT, Opthalmology, Dermatology and Obstetrics and Gynaecology from the Jafnna Teaching Hospital now conduct clinics at Green Memorial Hospital.
Renovations Started:
Centenary Block: A portion of the Centenary Block has been renovated and refurbished to accommodate all the current hospital activities.
Operation Theatre: The operating theatre is functioning again and being used for minor surgery. A major refurbishment to accommodate all the hospital activities will need to be done in the future.
Doctors’ Quarters: Minimal renovations have been undertaken to make the quarters habitable.
Short-term Plans: To further enhance the medical services at Green Memorial Hospital, the medical team is working on the following programs:
Surgical Training Workshops: A charity called Interplast UK has offered a grant to set up training workshops to improve surgical skills of junior doctors working in mission hospitals. A prerequisite for this grant is properly equipped and fully functioning operating theatres. Funds are needed to purchase the necessary equipment.
Complete Renovation of Centenary Block: This has been completed but rquires a lift to take patients to theatre.
