Recent accomplishments

Under the leadership of Dr Preman Jeyaratnam, much has been accomplished already:

Medical Team Formed:
Dr Preman Jeyaratnam is the Medical Superintendent at Green Memorial Hospital. He had his medical studies and training in Christian Medical College, Velore and the UK. He practiced medicine in the UK for several decades and is now willing and freely giving his services to Green Memorial Hospital.

Dr Atputhajeynem Devadharshan, joined Green Memorial Hospital soon after finishing his medical studies at Velore.

Mr Luther Sekvarajah Dushyandan, completed his bachelor’s degree in physiotherapy in India before joining Green Memorial Hospital. He is the only physiotherapist in the peninsula. He is also the business manager and hospital Secretary.

Dr (Mrs) Sriskandarajah, who is on a one-year sabbatical from the Jaffna University, will be working at Green Memorial Hospital until September 2006.

Medical programmes established:
24 hour service: The addition of new doctors has made it possible to offer a 24 hour service even during periods of heightened tension.

Nurses’ Training: As a push towards the re-establishment of Nurses’ Training Programmes, a Health Care Assistant Course has been started at t he Hospital. This program is funded by Christian Aid UK.

Mobile Clinic: To meet the needs of the poor families in remote areas of the Peninsula, the two Mission Hospitals, Green Memorial and McLeod Innuvil, conduct free mobile clinics in five areas.

Leprosy Colony: A community based rehabilitation project, with Green Memorial as the referral hospital has been connected within an “internally displaced community” from Katturpulam, which has been affected by leprosy and more recently by Tsunami. This program is funded for five years by the Leprosy Mission International.

Physiotherapy: A fully equipped Physiotherapy service now functions with a full time qualified Physiotherapist. Two assistants are receiving training from the Physiotherapist.

In-patient Facility: A limited in-patient facility is now operational to serve patients who require short term admissi
on.

Consultations: Specialists in Surgery and Obstetrics and Gynaecology from Jafnna Teaching Hospital now conduct clinics at Green Memorial Hospital.

Renovations Started:

Centenary Block: A portion of the Centenary Block has been renovated and refurbished to accommodate all the current hospital activities.

Operation Theatre: The operating theatre is functioning again and being used for minor surgery. A major refurbishment to accommodate all the hospital activities will need to be done in the future.

Doctors’ Quarters: Minimal renovations have been undertaken to make the quarters habitable.

Short-term Plans: To further enhance the medical services at Green Memorial Hospital, the medical team is working on the following programs:

Surgical Training Workshops: A charity called Interplast UK has offered a grant to set up training workshops to improve surgical skills of junior doctors working in mission hospitals. A prerequisite for this grant is properly equipped and fully functioning operating theatres. Funds are needed to purchase the necessary equipment.

Complete Renovation of Centenary Block: The capital program planned for 2006 includes the completion of the renovation to a major section of the Centenary Block.

At-Home Physiotherapy Services: Physiotherapy services will be extended to meet the needs of disabled patients at home who require regular physiotherapy and rehabilitation, not currently available in Jaffna.
