Nineteenth century American Medical
Missionaries in Jaffna, Ceylon: with special reference to Samuel Fisk
Green
By Thiru Arumugam
Some years ago I read about Samuel Fisk Green and I was absolutely
fascinated by his life story and that he had established in Jaffna the
first western medical school in Ceylon where finally about 113 Medical
Practitioners were trained including Ceylon's first Doctor of Medicine
(MD), awarded by one of the top medical schools in USA. He also
translated about 4500 pages of medical text books, including Gray's
Anatomy, into Tamil. I felt that this man's achievements had not
received the publicity and recognition that he fully deserved.
A scan of the cover page of the hardback book is attached. Further
details are given in the website of the book created by my son at: www.thiruarumugam.com
