Current Needs

The hospital is in dire need of:

  • Trained medical personnel, doctors and nurses to provide core medical services.
  • Renovation and refurbishment of dilapidated buildings. The Centenary Block, though dilapidated, is the only structurally sound building.
  • Specialist services such as Surgery, Paediatrics and Cardiology.

  • The most urgent and greatest need at Green Memorial is trained medical staff. To get Green Memorial back on its feet, these staffing needs must be met first. With proper staffing, the hospital will be able to generate sufficient income to be self-supporting. Recruiting and retaining medical staff is a challenge because living and working in the Northern Province is difficult due to the uncertainties and unsafe conditions brought on by the ethnic conflict. Many trained medical professionals chose to move to foreign lands, thus shrinking the candidate pool. The disparity in remuneration for medical professionals working in mission hospital is huge in comparison to those who work in government hospitals. The government medical professionals are paid significantly higher salaries and receive more benefits.

    Appeal for funds

Global Ministries, USA, and United Church of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, have committed to provide funds for a three year period, starting in 2004 and ending in 2006. With these funds the hospital has been able to recruit two additional doctors and undertake partial renovations. To sustain the rebuilding efforts, it is imperative that sufficient funds are made available once the funding from Global Ministries and United Church of Chapel Hill stop. As an initial step, our appeal is targeted at raising funds for the immediate priority – staffing. Starting in 2007, it is projected that a minimum of USŁ24,000 or SL Rs 2.4 million is needed annually for the next three years to continue recruiting and retaining the medical staff at Green Memorial.
